This is the 3rd year Miramar Prison Garden has participated in Seeds to Feeds, and we are stoked to host this year's picnic in the garden!
You are invited to interact with the garden by hand-picking specially grown leaves and flowers to complement your meal. Enjoy your kai while surrounded by established trees like kauri, puriri and kohuhu, and spot our resident native birds like kereru, piwakawaka and karearea.
We will have printed booklets so you can learn more about the history of the garden, which has stone walls built by prisoners in around the 1920s.
This is a unique part of Wellington's history and we look forward to sharing it with you!
We have been a community garden since 2012 and have now grown to over 100 members (including family groups). We are hoping to use this year's Seeds to Feeds funds to build a pātaka or storehouse. This will allow gardeners to leave their excess produce or fresh cut flowers for people who need it. The pataka will also have a blackboard so people can connect by writing messages.
Another project we have planned for 2022 is a large mural to decorate the back wall of the greenhouse.
We are so proud to be linked up with the Seeds to Feeds network. See you at our special event!
COVID SAFE PLAN :
So that we are staying safe tickets are allocated to an arrival time. This is so we can stagger people through their journey around the garden. If you can't get the number of tickets you need for an allocated time, book the number of people you want tickets for and email Sarah@seedstofeeds.nz to discuss timing.
We will be scanning vaccine passes when you sign in.
Masks are to be worn at all times except for when seated and eating.
We ask you to bring your picnic set up, plates or containers for your meal, cutlery, cups, and picnic blankets. We will have people on hand to help you find space that fits within safe physical distancing.
The picnic we'll be preparing for you is:
Hummus made three ways
Choose one of our fresh-made hummus as the base for your lunch. There’ll be three options – including one made with roasted pumpkin from our garden – and all vegan and gluten-free.
Bread from Shelly Bay Baker
A selection of organic stoneground sourdough bread from our good friends at Shelly Bay Baker. Gluten-free options (not from SBB) will be available.
Infused oils, made for our picnic
Anoint your hummus and bread, or take home your own tiny bottle – your choice of one of four special oil infusions made from and for our garden for the picnic.
Oils infused with aromatics like:
Pūhā, sage, and calendula
Kopakopa and lemon balm
Kawakawa
Seaweed sprinkles
A selection of edible seaweeds foraged from Miramar peninsula then dried – sprinkle them on hummus or salad to add salt, nutrients, and umami.
Garden salad of greens and flowers
Hand-pick edible leaves and flowers to complement your meal (garden folks will be on hand to advise).
We can't wait to share beautiful kai with you our beautiful garden
