This is the 4th year Miramar Prison Garden has participated in Seeds to Feeds, and we are stoked to host this year's Pretty Potluck Picnic in the garden!
This years picnic is potluck and so we invite you to contribute a dish of celebration to our buffet table, ideally something that is meat free and can cater to 8 - 10 people. We also ask you to provide a simple ingredients list so we can manage any dietary restrictions.
If you would like to contribute to our event either through music, games or volunteering on the day, please let us know.
This years picnic will have the feel of a classic country fair, with games, animals, arts and more!
Three competitions you can enter:
- Most creative picnic set up; go wild with doilies, hand paint your picnic blanket, all animal print, get creative and have fun (no marquees or large picnic tables)
- Creative cake topping; the woman's weekly cook book has nothing on your cake design, think cute animals, spooky scenes, or classic piping (no higher than two layers, no larger than 25cm in diameter, all cakes will be served as part of the buffet)
- Colouring competition, pick up a template, use the pens, bring your own and we make a fun collage with all of the entries
Many more activities to get involved with on the day
Running times:
1 pm - Guests arrival, find your picnic spot, add to the buffet
2 pm - Cake and Picnic set up judges select the winners
3 pm - Sculpture exhibition talk by artists in residency Ruth Roberton-Taylor & Manju Tomar's
Kai available throughout
Enjoy your kai while surrounded by established trees like kauri, puriri and kohuhu, and spot our resident native birds like kereru, piwakawaka and karearea. We will have printed booklets so you can learn more about the history of the garden, such as stone walls built by prisoners in around the 1920s. This is a unique part of Wellington's history and we look forward to sharing it with you!
We have been a community garden since 2012 and have now grown to over 100 members (including family groups).
WHAT TO BRING:
- Item for the buffet table
- Picnic set up, including plate, cutlery and cup
- Sun protection
Please kind in mind this space is a community garden with private allotments, we ask that you don't pick anything from the garden unless given permission from one of the garden representatives. Please also note there are a number of beehives at the garden, and though they are in two areas and will be separated from the crowd by mesh and barriers if you have an allergy please keep this in mind.
We can't wait to share beautiful kai with you our beautiful garden
