The New-To-Town Picnic

  • Newtown School & Community Emergency Hub Mein Street Wellington, Wellington, 6021 New Zealand (map)

Come and connect with our community at our nourishing event showcasing locally sourced, grown, and prepared food.

This is Newtown’s third year participating in Seeds to Feeds and every year we have evolved into something new. With new growing spaces, new community connections, and a team of people passionate about local food - this year we invite you to enjoy this “new to town” picnic where we will be showcasing food that has been newly grown, foraged, and prepared.

The picnic

We are so thrilled to be hosting this at Newtown School. We’ll be offering delicious soups, salads, and desserts made from fresh local produce some of which have been grown at the school by the kids of the Garden to Table Class. We also are serving a selection of local drinks.

It’s BYO plate, cutlery, cups, and blankets - our crew of amazing volunteers will be guiding you to your picnicking zone and ensuring you have a topped-up plate of delicious food.

If you would rather collect a meal for takeaway for yourself or someone who is isolating, we welcome you to do so and can select that as an option when you order.

Our Journey

Our 2021/22 Seeds to Feeds journey connected us with new groups and we took over some exciting new growing spaces. With a local garden that needed some TLC, we have grown potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and a selection of delicious herbs.

We took over some planter boxes in Carrara Park - where we have grown beautiful flowers, chillis, and herbs. Our team took turns in looking after these gardens and we loved connecting with the local residents spreading the word about Seeds to Feeds and learning from other passionate gardeners.

Throughout the season we have attended Seaweed workshops hosted by Rebecca Gouldhurst, harvested and preserved our produce as it becomes available, worked together to create new food spaces and we now cannot wait to share this with you.

What’s on the menu?

Selection of soups starring our locally grown produce

Salads featuring pickled vegetables from our new growing spaces

Cold-brew coffee from supporters, People’s coffee

A selection of foraged teas, drinks with local herbs

Dessert prepared by Bella, featuring preserved Newtown plums and blackberries from Rhona & Nevilles garden

Donated sourdough bread from Newtown resident cafe owners Lisa & Andy (Goods/Little Grump)

COVID SAFE PLAN :

We will be following government guidelines for hospitality venues to ensure we are keeping everyone safe and minimising COVID contact points, so please treat the space as would when visiting any cafe or restaurant.
